In ancient religions, human or animal sacrifice was a common method of honoring the gods. Symbolic rituals of sacrifice connect us to the divine through the conscious surrender of our autonomy over a piece of the physical world.
We are obsessed by sex, but also conflicted.
Sex is a union of equal and opposite forces, yet we are haunted by the horror of exploitation. To penetrate seems a violent act, but one we are irrevocably drawn to.
To fuck is to exert power, yet there is power in being the object of desire. The rules of this dance define our culture.
To give up control, to be used, is the ultimate humiliation. "Whore" is an object of scorn or pity, and "cuckold" is the punchline of a joke.
Our culture demands a whore. The whore breaks the rules of the dance and is cast out from society.
To give up one's autonomy, one's dignity, one's consent...this sacrifice allows others to satisfy themselves and move on. The order is maintained. The dance goes on.
The sacrifice is left dripping upon the altar....
"Revelation" is a series of performances I developed beginning in 2014, inspired by the Biblical account of the Apocalypse. This piece was part of The Adonis Project, an event curated by Ian MacKinnon and Travis Wood and filmed by Alex Godinez. As I display my ass to the packed audience, I am describing my experience being ritually fucked during "Offering of the Lamb" at Antebellum Gallery the previous year.
This performance at Spirit Studio in Silverlake was part of Homo-Harvest, a Thanksgiving-themed event curated by Jason Jenn and Ian MacKinnon and photographed by Gregory Frye in November 2014
This performance on the Spring Equinox in 2012 was the first of several performances in which I allowed the audience to ritually fuck me in a symbolic act of sacrifice. The Stag character symbolizes the wildness of youth, which allows itself to be tamed by society. In the end youth is sacrificed in the pursuit of pleasure, leaving behind the damaged vessel of adulthood.
